Discover Tumwater Falls: History, Nature, Close to Everything

Welcome to a place where history is rich and the natural environment awaits. I'm Tiffany Curtis, a local real estate agent with Olympic Sotheby's International Realty. I'm thrilled to show you why I love Tumwater Falls—located in the heart of Thurston County, Tumwater. This location offers more than just views; memories are made, engagement rings are presented (more on that later), and the essence of the Pacific Northwest comes to life.

Tumwater Falls is not just any spot on the map; it's where the Deschutes River bursts into a series of cascades. Whether you're here for a brisk afternoon walk away from the office on a summer afternoon or take in the surroundings all day, the falls offer a versatile environment for leisure activities.

Brewery Park at Tumwater Falls, one of the many local legacies of the former Olympia Brewery and the founding Schmidt family, was created in 1962 as a gift to the citizens of Thurston County. This generous gesture was aimed at preserving open space, sustaining the natural habitat, and maintaining the history of the Deschutes River Canyon. The park is run privately, showcasing the commitment to safeguarding nature while offering the public a picturesque and historical site to enjoy, reflecting the deep-rooted values of community and conservation held by the Schmidt family.

Begin your exploration on the half-mile loop trail weaving through the falls. The loop circles the river and the falls and crosses over in two locations where you can view the upper and lower falls. Take a detour down to the lower platform and feel the mist of the falls on your face. You can also get a glimpse of the old brewery building on the lower bridge. As you meander back on the trail, other buildings of the Olympia Brewing Company come into view. Standing as images of another era.

It's the perfect short little hike and offers shade for those hot days. So, if you're looking for a weekend outing or a chance to get out of the office, head to the park.

A Day at Historic Park

Further down the trail lies a historic park, a city of Tumwater Park, which is the perfect setting for family outings. Spacious grounds invite you to lay down a blanket and picnic under the shade of trees or the picnic shelter. The expansive playground offers kids of all ages the opportunity to get out there and run around.

For hobbyist photographers and professionals alike, Tumwater Falls and Historic Park offer a canvas to capture the falls and a closer picture of the old brewery. From Historic Park, you get a front-and-center look at the old building. And for those romantics considering a milestone moment, know that the park and falls have witnessed proposals, including my own. It's a place where love flourishes.

The park also connects to the Capitol Lake trail, offering a seamless connection for those seeking a longer walk or run. By following the trail under Interstate 5, visitors will discover an additional nature trail with two docks, providing a vantage point to look over the river and lake. If you keep going, you will hit Deschutes Parkway and head down to Marathon Park. Here, you can begin circling the lake, and taking in the views of downtown, the bay, and the Capitol.

The area offers an unparalleled lifestyle that combines natural beauty, modern living convenience, and a deep history. Are you captivated by the access to such amenities such as Tumwater Falls and its surrounding parks? Do you envision yourself calling this place home?
